Povestea se petrece în anul 253 al civilizației Xinyuan, în care rata crescută a criminalității și relația acesteia cu „empatia de gradul zero” reprezintă un subiect de interes. Uciderea unui curier duce la o organizație criminală, iar vinovatul se dovedește a fi o persoană cu „empatie de gradul zero”.
Fiind un roman contemporan de genul mister/suspans, acest roman se concentrează pe Luo Wenzhou, un căpitan al unității de investigare a crimelor din orașul Yan, care rezolvă cazuri care vin unul după altul, cu ajutorul lui Fei Du, un excentric director executiv fuerdai** care reușește cumva să fie implicat în fiecare dintre ele.
Romanul vorbește despre natura umană și despre lupte, despre viață și traume și despre cum, uneori, dacă șoptești ajutor, cineva ar trece prin foc pentru a te scoate din abis.
